I have had great success with Dewey letters in Gr 4 & 5. I make up a holiday and then write a letter to Granny - eg
Dear Granny, we are touring (914)_______ at the moment. We travelled by (626)_______, and saw many flying (597)______.etc,etc
It is as long or as short as one needs it to be, illustrated with clipart, and may vary with age & interest, but it is always a hit - they scuttle around finding the answers and although it is very noisy, by the end of it they have a pretty good idea of where to look for various subjects, and they also catch on to the idea of different numbers for different subjects. My boys love it!

• Quintura Search Engine
http://www.quintura.com/
http://kids.quintura.com/
A visual search tool. Your search term starts out in the middle of a
cloud of related terms, with links on the right. Simply mousing over a
related term shifts the search results. This could be particularly
effective in getting students past the first ten results, and helping
them understand differing perspectives on their topics.
The Top 100 Alternative Search Engines
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_100_alternative_search_engines.php
Why limit your searching to Google when the best engine for your purpose
might be a clustering engine that maps results, a recommendation search
tool, a spoken word engine, a social bookmark tool, a podcast search
engine, etc.
It groups the results by topic and this is a help to students
Google directory - http://www.google.com.au/dirhp?hl=en
KidsClick - http://www.kidsclick.org/
DMOZ - another directory - and human edited - but for older students

FactBites
http://www.factbites.com/
"What do you get if you cross a search engine with an encyclopedia?
Factbites," where the search results page itself includes key sentences
from each of the sources retrieved.
